OUR STORY

We have created one of the largest Nile crocodile operations in the world, backed by 30 years of experience.

The NILO Group’s story is one of an outstanding group of people with a love and passion for crocodiles and Africa. Over a period of 30 years the Pentolfe family mastered the art, science and business of crocodile farming. Taking hands with like-minded entrepreneurs of WILDFIG we have created one of the biggest Nile crocodile operations in the world, with four operations across southern Africa.

Driven by our values, our love of crocodiles and our passion for the conservation of the African bush, the NILO Group took the road less travelled and broke with conventional ways of farming crocodiles, becoming a world leader in the design and use of animal-friendly systems.

Close to our heart is the conservation of the Nile crocodile while maintaining its peaceful co-existence with people in a sustainably-managed natural habitat.

OUR FARMING PHILOSOPHY

An animal-friendly and constant free-flow rearing system.

In the past, the market’s quest for ever-increasing quality resulted in crocodile farmers being under enormous pressure to retain market share and price. Their answer was to create highly controlled and managed farming systems in increasingly unnatural environments.

Through experience in the field, the NILO Group learnt that crocodiles perform better in more natural situations, usually without any compromise on quality. Led by a clear set of guidelines, the Pentolfe family designed a unique, animal-friendly system with constant water flow that simulates the crocodiles’ natural environment. Our animals have met the market’s demands, proving that high-quality, naturally grown animals can be sustainably produced without compromising on the “Five Freedom Factors” for livestock:

3-Pain

NOURISHED

Freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition.

3-Pain

COMFORT

Freedom from discomfort.

3-Pain

HEALTHY

Freedom from pain, injury or disease.

BEHAVIOUR

Freedom to express normal behaviour.

RELAXED

Freedom from fear and distress.

NEIL PENTOLFE

NEIL PENTOLFE

Director Marketing & Operations

Neil is a visionary, innovator and dreamer who wanted a life in the bush where he would be involved with crocodiles and wildlife without completely exploiting or diminishing wild resources. In 1986 together with his young family and a pioneering spirit he established his first crocodile farm on the banks of the Lundi River in South Eastern Zimbabwe.

After many years of crocodile farming, conservation and research, Neil followed an intuition to become involved in the international trade of crocodile skins.

Soon after transition to trader, Neil’s love and respect of Crocodiles innovated an idea to create a natural environment in which crocodiles could be raised responsibly. His efforts over the years have been tireless and he has successfully built a massive and highly lucrative Crocodile business on the back of this concept.

BRANDON PENTOLFE
